The Norwegian Elkhound originated in Scandinavia many thousands of years ago.
These strong versatile hunting dogs were revered by the Vikings who used the breed for hunting bear, moose, elk and many other animals.
Remains of this breed have been found buried alongside Viking remains and their weapons dating back to 5000 BC, which indicates this breed's value within that culture in ancient times.
The Elkhound is a very strong yet versatile breed that is known for its stamina, especially in rugged mountain terrain.
They have a bold temperament and are normally friendly.
This breed is very people oriented and needs to be actively involved with its family pack.
They do well around children practically when introduced at a young age and properly trained.
This breed is considered to be medium in size standing 18 to 21 inches at the shoulder and weigh 40 to 60 pounds on average.
They have a short squarely built body with a strong straight back.
Its tail is sharply curved up and over to meet the back.
The head is wedge shaped yet broad and the muzzle is black, thick and tapering but does not come to a point.
The ears set high on the head and are firm.
They have a grey weather resistant double coat that needs little grooming.
Elkhound pups are born black and in a few weeks turn grey as their coat develops.
They eventually turn silver - grey with black saddle markings.
Dog health issues to watch for with this breed are hip dysplasia and PRA (pyotraumatic dermatitis).
As with all dog breeds we highly recommend talking with a professional dog breeder to better control and understand health issues within the breed.
The Elkhound is a fiercely independent dog that can be a challenge when it comes to obedience training.
With an adequate amount of daily exercise and dog training these dogs become very good canine companions.
