- 1). Adopt a Lhasa Apso. Living with a Lhasa is the best way to learn about the breed. Learning the personality and characteristics of the Lhasa Apso will help you find the right forever homes for your rescue dogs.
- 2). Volunteer for a Lhasa Apso rescue group. Lhasa Happy Homes (see Resources below) is a California-based Lhasa Apso rescue group that operates using volunteers. Foster a dog until he is adopted, try your hand at fund raising, transport dogs to the veterinarian, or work with shelters to identify and rescue dogs. Work with the rescue to learn as much as possible about how a rescue group operates.
- 3). Consult with a lawyer. Talk about incorporating as a non-profit group. Discuss the steps necessary to become a 501(c)(3) organization and familiarize yourself with the tax implications. The San Diego County Bar Association provides a referral service to match attorneys to clients who need specialty services. (See Resources below.)
- 4). Visit San Diego animal shelters. Talk with the shelter managers about your new rescue group. Find out their procedures for rescue groups saving dogs from the shelter. (See Resources below.)
- 5). Find a veterinarian. A veterinarian plays an important part of your rescue team. She will examine dogs as soon as they are taken from a shelter. The veterinarian will vaccinate and spay or neuter the Lhasa Apso rescue pup before he goes to a new home.
- 6). Solicit adopters. Join a meet-up group, an online community of dog lovers who meet throughout San Diego with their dogs for fun activities. Let the members know about your foster Lhasa's availability. Visit San Diego dog parks with your foster dog to introduce her to dog lovers who may know someone looking for a canine companion.
