Well, the first obvious reason dogs stick their heads out the window of your car is because it just plain feels good.
It's not too much different than why your children love to do this.
Except for those dogs that are prone to car sickness, most dogs love to go for a ride.
We as humans ride in a car all the time, but your dog doesn't get that luxury every day.
This is very exciting and a lot of fun for them.
It gives them a chance to see so many new things.
Let's not forget the fact that they are also with the people they love most ...
you! We can't possibly imagine all the ways our dogs enjoy this.
They have such a superior sense of smell that they probably take in a million different scents at very high speed.
They can also enjoy the different sounds that pass them by with their keen sense of hearing.
Can you imagine how much fun this is for them? As much fun as this can be for your dog, you need to understand that it can also be dangerous and you need to take some precautions if you let them do this.
Let's look at what can happen.
-Things can get caught in their eyes - There are seeds falling from trees, gravel popping up from the car in from of you, even careless people who throw out their cigarette butts can easily hit your dog.
- Your dog could jump out the window - If their head is out the window that means there may be enough room for their body to jump out.
(this is especially true for smaller dogs) What if your dog saw a cat or a squirrel while hanging his head out the window? They are not thinking about anything else other than their instinct to chase them.
They just get too excited and when they act fast it could be too late for you to catch them before they jump out.
If you are OK with your dog putting his head out the car window, please hold on to him at all times.
A good place to take him to do this would to just go for a drive in a quiet neighborhood where the speeds are lower and the traffic is minimal.
Crating your dog while riding in the car is a much safer approach when on busy roads and freeways.
If you don't have a crate, you can always put a harness on him to keep him more stable.
This would also protect your dog in case of a little fender bender.
